AIRBORNE

Design a machine which flies, get a grant to build it!

Hey there,

Airplanes are genuinely incredible. They're in my top 10 list of the best things humans have ever created. I still remember my first flight- that sudden jerk before racing down the runway, then just like that... you're in the sky. You're flying. wow.

Flying an actual plane sounds insane, right? And sure, it's expensive and pretty exclusive. But here's what we don't realize- building something that can fly is actually way more accessible than you'd think.

You can build a functional RC plane for under $50. Let that sink in.

So why not build something that flies? Something you designed. Something that would be airborne.

[Scroll down to see what you can build]

Some things you can make :o

Drone

A drone is a machine with 4 arms, each arm has a brushless motor along with a propellor and it flies using the thrust generated by those 4 motors.

RC Plane

An RC plane is a remote controlled airplane which has either one or multiple brushless motors with propellors which makes it fly. It has different parts like rudder, elevator and airelons to control it's flight.

Rocket

A model rocket is a mini version of actual rocket, it uses solid propellent fuel and goes into air, not into space but some mid/upper levels of our atmosphere.

If you wanna make something else, post about it in #airborne, I'd LOVE to see new things and ideas. The core requirement is just to make it fly :o
(lwkey make a 3d printer fly and we'll fund)

FAQs

Airborne is a Hack Club YSWS(You ship We Ship) under which you have to design a machine which flies and in return you'll get a grant to build it IRL.

Yes! As long as you're above 13 and below 18 years of age, you can! If you're not then I'd really appreciate if you refer it to those who are!

Alright, so first of all start with deciding what you want to build. Once you decide that, start reading about how it works and it's mechanism on the internet. Things like drones and RC planes seem hard to build but they're really not- Apart from that there will be guides for some starter projects, so I'm sure that would help you a lot aswell.

The actual model hasn't been decided yet but there will most probably be tiers which will set the upper cap of the money you can get- you'll have to submit a BOM along with your project to show the distribution and the parts you're getting. Time spent by you on your project will determine it's tier, the rates will hover around 5$/hr :)

You have to use lapse for non-hackatime thingies like CAD or PCB designing etc. and you can use hackatime wherever possible.

This YSWS is being run by Hack Club, by teens for teens. You can read more about Hack Club at hackclub.com :)
